New dietary guidelines for Americans

dietaryguidelinesUSA.jpg

The Government published the first update in five years of their "Dietary Guidelines for Americans."

But, despite the significant talk of U.S. obesity crisis, good number of the main pillars of these earlier guidelines remained intact.

On the head, the guidelines emphasize the need for physical activity and encourage the food more as vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, seafood, s also reduced sodium, trans fat, sugar, refined grains.

To help translate the information into everyday life, the guidelines contain advice, such as:

Enjoy your food, but eating less.Avoid oversized servings.Make half your plate of fruits and vegetables. Spend fat free or low-fat milk (1%). Compare the sodium in soup, bread and frozen foods - foods and choose foods with lower numbers. Drink water instead of sugary drinks.

Some daily limits or the goals established by the new guidelines include:

-20% To 35% of calories total fat intake.Saturated fat - less than 10% of total calories (bold mono and polyunsaturated may be substituted).Trans - fat less than 1 percent of calories.Cholesterol – less than 300 mg.Fiber - 14 g per 1,000 calories.Potassium - 4,700 mgFruits and vegetables – at least 2.5 cups.Refined grains – less than 3 oz.Sodium – less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day and less than 1 500 mg for African Americans with hypertension, diabetes and disease chronic renal (including children), as well as people aged over 50.

Sodium recommendations have shattered the American Heart Association, who wanted to see advice from coverage to reduce consumption of sodium on the entire population, not only to groups of individuals. Chairman of the AHA, Ralph Sacco, MD, said this.

To the question of sodium, management misses the fact that most Americans have high blood pressure or are at risk of developing in their lives. All these clearly in favour of the need for a national commitment reduce consumption of sodium less than 1,500 mg per day for all Americans.

Personally, it bored these guidelines seem to be a regurgitation of past councils. But what you think, that the Government went far enough with these updates to the guidelines? What you would have liked to see addressed?
